The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has been a major clinical service since its commencement in 1976. This Unit also provides a comprehensive Orthopaedic service to the Veteran population. The department has traditionally made a significant contribution to the provision of clinical services to the community and the teaching of medical students at Flinders University, Adelaide Australia.

Orthopaedic Unit, School of Surgery and Pathology. Orthopaedics currently consists of three sites - The Perth Orthopaedic Institute, Fremantle Hospital, and M Block QEII Medical Centre. The Perth Orthopaedic Institute is located at the back of Hollywood Private Hospital and has up-to-date facilities for clinical research, including sports sciences. The M Block laboratories mainly conduct research into cellular and molecular biology projects. The Fremantle site conducts clinical research and has recently established a new biomechanical laboratory. Professor David Wood was appointed as the Head of Unit of Orthopaedics at UWA in 1994
