Torsion In-Toeing and Out-Toeing

http://orthosurg.ucsf.edu/public_site/sindex.cfm?page_ID=pediatrics&ar ...

Pediatrics: Torsion TORSION Definition The term torsion refers to in-toeing and out-toeing. In-toeing In-toeing, or "pigeon toes", is a normal part of development of the lower limbs in a child. In more than 95% of children who have in-toeing, their lower limbs rotate out - and so correct - on their own, without any intervention. This process goes on for the first decade of life. At this point, the adult shape of the lower limbs has set in, and no further improvement can be expected. No non-surgical intervention has been shown to influence the shape of the lower limbs during this period of growth - including not braces, not special shoes, and not physical therapy. Out-toeing Out-toeing also can be a normal part of development of the lower limbs in a child. Unlike in-toeing, however, it does not spontaneously correct, because the lower limbs normally rotate outward with growth. In fact, out-toeing at best can stay the same or at worst it can become more pronounced. But like in-toeing, no non-surgical intervention has been shown to influence out-toeing.
