DeQuervain’s Disease is a condition that was originally discovered by a French physician in 1895. DeQuervain had a large number of patients who were experiencing severe pain on the radial or thumb side of the wrist. These patients were having a great deal of difficulty moving their wrists and the joint was not functioning as it had in the past. Searching for some common trait that might be causing the pain, DeQuervain discovered that they had all engaged in repetitive work-related activities.

DeQuervain’s tendinitis is a condition brought on by irritation or swelling of the tendons found along the thumb side of the wrist. The irritation causes the compartment (lining) around the tendon to swell, changing the shape of the compartment; this makes it difficult for the tendons to move as they should. The swelling can cause pain and tenderness along the thumb side of the wrist, usually noticed when forming a fist, grasping or gripping things, or turning the wrist. The pain is usually described by patients as a very sharp, stabbing pain. It is not subtle. Although many physicians call this an inflammatory condition, actually inflammation is not a key component of the problem.

DeQuervain's Stenosing Tenosynovitis
Description
The tendons that straighten the fingers and thumb travel on the back of the wrist, and are held down to the wrist by a series of tunnels, or pulleys. When the tendons that straighten the thumb become swollen and inflamed as they pass through one of the tunnels, it becomes painful to use the thumb. Repeated use of the thumb only causes more swelling and inflammation of these tendons.

Ask the doctor - deQuervain's Tendonitis
This sounds like a problem with the tendons which lie along the thumb side of the wrist. These tendons are attached to the muscles of the thumb and so control thumb movement, especially when you're using your thumb to grasp things.
Your week of decorating probably involved holding a paintbrush in a position that you weren't used to or which proved awkward. This may have put stress on these grasp tendons, irritating them and causing them to swell and become inflamed. The end result is stiffness and pain, especially when you form a fist with that hand, try to grip things or turn the wrist (for example when opening a door). This condition is known as deQuervain's tendonitis.
